WHO?
Every year Weston College and UCW put on a Summer Show that exhibits the Creative Arts and Music students work to the public.
WHAT?
In group or pairs, this was a competitive brief that allowed us free reign over what we wanted to the show to look like. Outcomes include invitations to the event, along with way-finding signage and poster advertising.
Our concept demonstrates the experimental nature of the arts - it is usually seen as the polar opposite of science, though it follows the same rules:
There are tried and tested methods, but experimenting is what leads to new outcomes. It takes technical skills and knowledge in conjunction with creativity to succeed in every Creative Arts sector, which is not appreciated enough in society as a whole. The brand has to be simple, bright and bold to draw attention and help the public easily navigate the premises.
Inspired by the periodic table, we gave each umbrella course its own symbol, with the logo drawing on this aesthetic to create a consistent look. We displayed a preview of the brand for voting, along with real science props from the science department on campus, filling the flasks with a paint and water mix in the Element brand colours.
The hashtag #inmyelement is based on a common phrase used to describe someone who is truly at home in what they are doing and enjoy it. Tied with the theme of scientific elements, it works to represent ourselves in our subjects and the experimental side to art and design.
